How cool is that? Yesterday, with the help of Peter Genuardi, my brother Dave Perkins, and Louisa Jenkins (and lots of great advice from older brothers, friends and smart advisors), we won ourselves a little contest at the Bard Center for Entrepreneurship, where I did my MBA program. I’m just tickled. The little check in the picture below will sure help us grow our business a bit, and we’ll be signing on with the Boulder Innovation Center this summer to help take things forward.

I think we have a chance to do something fun and useful here – create the best darn nut products available, and solve the “protein problem” in coffee shops while we’re at it. I guess the judges agreed.
align='left' style="padding:5px;" />

It was really gratifying that two local natural and organic companies placed top two in a contest dominated by tech companies. Even more gratifying that the second place winner was The Organic Dish. Um, we use their kitchen to roast our nuts by moonlight. They’re our landlords. How funny is that? They had a really great presentation, and I highly recommend their organic food ready to bake in 15 mins – super delish.

So now that we finally have something to talk about, we decided to get Olomomo a little twitter feed – follow us here: @olomomo.

In the pic: Rutt Bridges, a local politician, entrepreneur and investor; Justin Perkins, Founder and CEO of Olomomo Nut Company, and Catherine Kunst, Executive Director of the Bard Center for Entrepreneurship.

Good news! The nuts are rapidly spreading across the land, and a couple weeks ago, Spice (now Olomomo) tied for second place in the Naturally Boulder Days 60-second pitch contest for local, natural product entrepreneurs! We make yummy, exotic flavors designed to go well with coffee, wine or beer, and they’re perfect for appetizers, cheese, party snacks, or for a high-protein snack while traveling or exercising.

5% of holiday nut sales go to Prevent Human Trafficking – an organization helping street kids in Thailand to stay out of the poverty trap. Last chance to order online for our last production run of the year is Dec 5th. Last chances to buy local in 2008: December 13th at the Boulder County Fairgrounds from 9-4.

We roast our original cinnamon & cayenne roasted almonds, cardamom & vanilla roasted almonds, and maple & orange pecans in a copper kettle. Our nuts are healthier and tastier than traditional, sugar-laden German roasted nuts. We cut waaay back on the sugar and use organic, evaporated cane juice. No more heavy sugar belly – you can eat a bunch and still feel good. Our aim is to be 100% organic by next year if we can make the numbers work. We use all natural ingredients, organic when possible, and don’t add any extra oils or dairy products.

Here’s some feedback from Bob, a nut-loving customer in Denver:

“I love your nuts. I first came across your stall at the City Park farmers market and I rue the weeks I miss picking up a pack of your delicious cinnamon and cayenne nuts. Thank you so much for setting up that stall, and selling these tasty treats. They make my Sunday and workdays all the more spicy. I really appreciate it!”

If you manage to save some for sharing, they make a great gift for holidays or special occasions, and a great alternative to bringing the usual wine or dessert to a dinner party. Order the nuts online as gifts for your friends, office mates, employees or clients. We’ll ship around the US as long as you get your holiday orders in by December 5th!
